Service Requirements

A core requirement of the Ozanam Scholars Program is participation in service opportunities on the local, national, and international landscape.  The following service requirements are program requisites:

  1. Local Service
During the fall and spring semester first-year Ozanam Scholars are required to take part in 60 hours (each semester) of direct service to the poor and marginalized.  The location of the service to be performed is to be determined by the program coordinator.  Once matriculated into year two, scholars are required to participate in 80 hours of direct service per semester for the remainder of the program.

  2. National Service
At the conclusion of the spring semester first and second-year Ozanam Scholars are required to participate in national service opportunities.  The program coordinator will arrange these opportunities and the two / three week experience will allow students to have a comparative service experience.

  3. International Service
Ozanam Scholars will have the extraordinary opportunity to travel abroad to perform service and experience the global community.  These opportunities will take place during the semester break (January) of the first year and at the conclusion of the spring semester (May) of the third year.  In addition, Scholars are strongly encouraged to participate in the variety of Discover the World opportunities which allow for both academic study and service abroad.

Group Service Requirements
In addition to the weekly service opportunities established for Scholars, the Service Committee will establish additional local service opportunities in which Scholars may participate. These opportunities, although voluntary, will provide students an opportunity for additional experience in working with the poor and marginalized as well as foster greater community among the Scholars’ community.
