The Center for Professional Education offers, workshops, certificate programs and professional designation examination preparation courses, as well as consulting services to industry, governments and regulators worldwide. For more than 30 years, the Center has served the educational needs of more than 10,000 professionals in the insurance, risk management and financial services industries.

Specialized Workshops
In addition to the programs listed above, we also offer specialized workshops to address specific needs within the insurance industry and the business community as a whole.

  • Certificate in the Business of Insurance
    We have developed the Certificate in the Business of Insurance for individuals who wish to expand their breadth of knowledge of the insurance industry. This program, taught on four consecutive Fridays by Dr. Jack Hampton, provides a comprehensive overview of the major concepts and areas of expertise that are the fundamental aspects of the industry, and is perfect for those new employees who want to "fast track" their knowledge. Upon completion of the program, each participant receives a certificate from St. John's University.

  • Institute for Middle School and High School Teachers
    This two-week program, which is co-sponsored by the Insurance Education Institute and St. John’s University, is designed to enable middle school and high school teachers to become more effective in teaching a range of insurance and insurance-related subjects. The annual program, which meets during the summer is designed to give teachers a detailed understanding of all forms of insurance, with emphasis upon their relevance to high school students and their families. The program meets at the Manhattan Campus of St. John's University, which is conveniently located near the financial district of lower Manhattan.

Seminars

Our seminars for Fall 2007 are:

  • Introduction to Risk Management and Insurance (14 NY CE credits – all lines)
    Designed to assist agents, brokers, and non-insurance professionals working in or with insurance organizations to better understand the business, this program provides basic information about insurance terminology, contracts, insurance company core processes, reinsurance and regulation.  Seminar enrollment is limited to maximize interaction with the instructor.  Materials include a glossary and list of recommended reference sources.
    Who should attend?
    • Professionals working in the insurance industry who do not have experience or formal training in insurance
    • Professionals relatively new in the insurance industry
    • Consultants working with insurance organization clients
    • Attorneys, accountants, data processing professionals, personnel and training specialists, public relation officers, and other professionals working in or with insurance organizations.

    About the instructor
    Michael R. Hubbell, formerly Chair of the Department of Insurance at Olivet College, has over 30 years experience in the insurance field, and has conducted seminars for diverse audiences including professionals from Citigroup, IBM, J.P. Morgan, The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Mike received a B.A. from Michigan State and an M.B.A. from The College of Insurance, now part of St. John’s.

  • A One-Day Reinsurance Intensive (7 NY CE credits – all lines) 
    This course is intended for those who need to know the basic elements of reinsurance and how it functions, without the technical material. Participants will derive a fundamental knowledge of how the reinsurance business operates. A basic knowledge of insurance is required. This course is especially useful for those who need to communicate with reinsurance professionals and other personnel, but who do not require an in-depth knowledge of more intricate material.

    • Administrative and accounting personnel
    • Systems analysts
    • Human resources and other non-reinsurance professionals.

    About the instructor
    Richard C. Standing is President of Delta Intermediaries, and insurance and reinsurance consulting firm. Previously he was Executive Vice President of Summit Intermediaries, Inc. and Vice President of Willcos Barringer, an intermediary of Johnson and Higgins. He has been an instructor at St. Peter’s Boys’ High School and at NYU’s School of Education. Mr. Standing received his bachelor’s degree from Wagner College, master’s degree from NYU and took numerous professional and insurance courses at The College of Insurance.
