Tobin Accounting Students Compete in the 2007 Deloitte Tax Case Study
October 30, 2007
October 30, 2007—A team of
undergraduate and graduate accounting students from The Peter J.
Tobin College of Business participated in the fifth annual Deloitte
Tax Case Study Competition, a competition where graduate and
undergraduate students from over 40 colleges and universities
across the U.S. gathered to test their knowledge, problem-solving
skills, and ability to work together as a team.
Tobin’s undergraduate team,
including members Amanda Sanseverino, Catherine Pollari, Lisa
Alfano, Stefanie Schumacher, and Izabella Shamayeva; each received
a $100 regional honorable mention award in recognition of their
performance. In the competition the Tobin, and all other teams,
were given five hours to complete a case study that required
participants to analyze information and identify data relevant for
tax purposes, identify issues and alternative tax treatments, and
develop and recommend solutions that appropriately cite the
Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations. At the completion of the
competition, each team prepared a written solution to their case
and submitted it to a panel of judges from Deloitte Tax LLP for
evaluation.
“In this competition, college and
university teams tackle the kind of complex tax situations that
companies face in the business world,” said Shaun Budnik, President
of the Deloitte Foundation and partner of Deloitte & Touche USA
LLP. “In the five years we have sponsored this program, our goal
has been to inspire more students to take additional courses in tax
and pursue a career in this profession. The Deloitte Foundation is
proud to support the next generation of business leaders as they
compete in this important educational event.”
“In the collegiate world, this is
the signature event of its kind,” said Chet Wood, chairman and
Chief Executive Officer of Deloitte Tax LLP. We were pleased that
once again so many students from top university tax programs
participated in this event.”
All accounting staff,
administrators and faculty members of The Peter J. Tobin College of
Business are proud of these students for their dedication and
intelligence.
