Teaching students the meaning and value of
service to others is ultimately what our programs are about.
Service learning is in its sixth year as a formal program at St.
John's University. The program allows students to experience
firsthand the rewards that come from making a positive contribution
to the lives of other people. Students learn for themselves that
giving to others will help lead to success.
Students are placed into challenging situations with not-for-profit
organizations to help tackle important social issues and solve
complex strategic and operational problems – an approach that links
service to the community with academic and career goals, and
underscores the importance of service, generosity of spirit and
personal integrity. The objective is to not only involve
students in meaningful issues that stimulate personal growth, but
also to help them develop valuable skills in the management of
not-for-profit organizations – a segment of growing importance and
sophistication in our nation's economy.
