Professor Elizabeth Berlings has been selected from a national applicant pool to attend one of 22 summer study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The Endowment is a federal agency that each summer supports seminars and institutes at colleges and universities so that teachers can work in collaboration and study with experts in humanities disciplines.

Professor Berlings will participate in a five-week program entitled “Representations of the ‘Other’:  Jews in Medieval Christendom,” directed by Professor Irven M. Resnick of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga at Oxford University’s Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.

Division Of Criminal Justice & Legal Studies

8th Annual Criminal Justice Awards
The College of Professional Studies held its 8th Annual Criminal Justice Awards Dinner on Monday, April 10 in Marillac Terrace on the Queens Campus. Sponsored by the Criminal Justice Program and the Criminal Justice Students’ Association in conjunction with The Office of Alumni Relations, the evening celebrated accomplished Criminal Justice professionals as well as students who are striving to become established in their field. More than 150 alumni, faculty, friends and students attended.

The following awards were presented:

Past honorees attending included First Deputy Commissioner George Grasso ‘84L, Chief of Transportation Michael Scagnelli ‘68C, and former Deputy Commissioner for Community Affairs Joyce A. Stephen, all of the New York City Police Department.

Immigration Information Event
Approximately 100 students attended an Immigration Information Event sponsored by Professor Ellen Boegel’s Immigration Law class on April 10.  The event coincided with nationwide immigrant demonstrations.  Students enrolled in the class displayed posters and distributed print materials representative of many different viewpoints to fellow students who gathered in front of DaSilva Hall to debate the issues.  Students from The School of Education also participated and learned how proposed immigration laws might change their responsibilities with regard to undocumented immigrant children.

Division Of Mass Communications, Journalism, Television & Film
Professor Deborah Greh, Ed.D., of the Department of Communications, Journalism and Media Studies, was elected to the office of Eastern Region Vice President-Elect of the National Art Education Association. 

Dean’s Office
The annual College of Professional Studies Awards Ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 25, 2006. CPS students were honored not only for their academic achievement in the various majors, but also recognized for their service and commitment to the University’s Vincentian Mission. Marillac. A close-to-capacity crowd of students, their families and friends, and other guests filled Marillac Terrace for an evening of celebration of academic excellence and achievement. Dean Kathleen Vouté MacDonald presented a special plaque of appreciation to Charles R. Anonucci, Sr. ’78 CBA for his generosity in establishing an Endowed Internship for CPS students.
