April is Research Month

April 04, 2005

April is Research Month, and the Office of the Provost, in cooperation with the Center for Teaching and Learning, is hosting many exciting events designed to showcase the academic and creative endeavors of the St. John’s faculty and students.

The activities will begin on April 7th with the Faculty Research Forum, when faculty will have the opportunity to display their research in various formats, including posters, interactive presentations, exhibits and one-on-one discussions.  The Forum will take place from 11am-2pm in Bent Hall 277 A/B.  Concurrently, the Office of Grants and Sponsered Research will be holding the Sixteenth Annual Research Reception from 12:15-1:15pm in Bent Hall 277 A/B.  This event will honor faculty and administrators who have secured new grants or continued funding support from external sources during the past year to further education, research and public service missions of St. John’s University.

On April 12th, the Staten Island Campus will host Student/Faculty Research Day with a poster session from 11am-2pm in the Presidential Room of the Kelleher Center.  A similar poster session will be held for Queens Campus students on April 21st from11am-2pm in the Carnesecca Arena when Student Research Day is celebrated.  Each event will offer attendees an opportunity to view the research projects of fellow students and faculty.

The Eighth Annual University-Wide Reception for Faculty Book Authors, honoring those faculty who have published a book since April 2004, will take place on April 14th from 3:30-5:30pm in the Academic Commons of the Library.  The University community may become acquainted with the recently published monographs of their colleagues and professors at this event.

The Center for Teaching and Learning will be hosting an event for its own fellows’ research on April 20th.  The CTL Fellows’ Presentation on Research in Teaching and Learning will take place from 2:30-4:30pm in Bent 277A.

In addition to the annual events, this year the Provost’s Office and the CTL will sponser the Interdisciplinary Research Round Table Lunches, a series featuring a number of interdisciplinary topics which will take place in the Faculty Club on Mondays during the month of April at 12 noon.  The topics will include Global Environmental Issues on April 4th chaired by Dr. Uma Balakrishnan and Dr. Louis Trombetta, Writing Biography on April 11th chaired by Dr. Frank Brady and Dr. Frank Coppa, Religion and the Public Sphere on April 18th chaired by Dr. Robert Fanuzzi and Dr. Nick Healy, and Multidisciplinary Programs at St. John’s: Present and Prospect on April 25th chaired by Dr. Diana Bartelt and Dr. Alina Camacho-Gingerich.

Research is the backbone of every academic community.  At St. John’s University, faculty and students’ research activities are increasingly varied and complex, and have resulted in a rise in grant awards, publications and paper presentation at conferences.  Research Month is a way for all members of the University to increase their awareness and support of the impressive work being done here.
