The Seventh Annual Festival, Celebrate Mexico Now, and
St. John’s University’s Committee on Latin American and Caribbean
Studies (CLACS) present "The New Songs of the Ceiba" on Wednesday,
September 22 at St. John’s Manhattan campus. Celebrate México
Now is a citywide festival of contemporary Mexican art and
culture produced by CN Management.
"The New Songs of the Ceiba" is a trilingual anthology of
literary works by contemporary Mayan writers from the Yucatán
Peninsula. The primary literary voices for their people, these
writers produce short stories, essays, poetry, and plays in Mayan
and in Spanish that explore traditions and contemporary life in
their communities. The works are edited by Dr. Carlos Montemayor
(1947-2010) and Dr. Donald Frischmann, with English translations by
Frischmann (Instituto de Cultura de Yucatán, 2009).
The event will be moderated by Dr. Alina Camacho-Gingerich,
Chair of CLACS and a professor in the Languages and Literatures
program of St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The
