March 22, 2005

Queens, NY – St. John's University's The School of Education programs Jumpstart Queens, Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC) and  America Reads * America Counts recently teamed up with Jamaica High School’s “Play it Smart Program” to raise $1,600 at a bowling fundraiser to aid victims of the recent tsunami that devastated much of Southeast Asia.

“Our students planned this event to bring attention to the devastation caused by the tsunami and motivate other young people to do something about it,” said Charisse Willis, Program Director. “All who participated in the fundraiser were extremely enthusiastic. As we present our check to the United Way, we are proud that St. John’s is helping to send a message of hope to all those affected by this tragedy.”

“As future educators we have a responsibility to the future of our children,’ said Denise Ortiz, Assistant to the Program Director. “By planning this event we are helping young people in Southeast Asia to rebuild their lives and hopefully return to school and other activities they enjoyed prior to this disaster.” All proceeds raised at this fundraiser will benefit the United Way of New York City Organization for the Tsunami relief effort.
