Mark your calendar as the St. John’s Community
gathers together to raise awareness in the fight against childhood
cancer on Thursday, March 15, 2012 to support our
annual effort for Locks of
Love and the St. Baldrick’s
Foundation. It’s truly a great day filled with
lots of energy, enthusiasm and buzz – not only from the clippers,
but in the fight against this disease.
Rino Grzinc, Associate Director of Development,
reflects on his three-year involvement with the event, "My
participation in St. Baldrick's and Locks of Love allows me to
actively support research to find a cure and better treatment for
childhood cancers. The annual event engages the community, while
helping to raise awareness in a very demonstrative manner."
Participants are asked to raise money for childhood cancer
research as 100% of the proceeds go directly to
the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Participants who raise funds will
shave their heads in an effort to show solidarity with the children
who suffer from cancer. Locks of Love, a non-for-profit
organization, will donate the “locks” (hair 10
inches or longer) to be used to make wigs
for children suffering from hair-loss diseases.
Kevin James, ‘11C agreed, “No matter how short
your hair is the benefit of helping others is always bigger. It
doesn’t matter what people look like on the outside, hair and other
physical features are not connected to a person’s inner
identity."
Omar Nesheiwat, a St. John’s student and 2011
participant comments, “It was such a fun way to raise money and
awareness. There are so many children affected by this
disease and to be able to contribute to the cause by shaving my
head was immensely rewarding. I never thought my bald head
would raise over $500 through my family and friends.”
And not only do we “shave and cut” our way to
conquering childhood cancer, the day also features raffles,
giveaways and participation from key members of our University.
Join us for this amazing event on both the Queens and Staten
Island campuses on March 15! Help us make this
event even bigger and better than years past. Our hope is to raise
$40,000 in 2012, but for this to be a reality….
