What is Sport Management?

Sports is a business. All sports and recreational organizations require the expertise of well-educated leaders to handle a variety of diversified responsibilities, including supervision, financial management, public and media relations, advertising and sales promotion, facilities planning, accounting and purchasing. The sport management program prepares its students for successful and challenging careers in the professional sports and recreation industry.

In addition, due to the globalization of sports, St. John’s University is pleased to offer an International Sport Management study abroad program, based at the University of Leicester, England. Spring 2000 was our inaugural semester. This unique international study abroad program has allowed sport management majors and minors to pursue specialized course work in England. The aim of the International Sport Management courses is to provide students with an understanding of the development and diffusion of sport, by introducing them to a range of problems and issues confronting sports managers and the kind of strategic thinking that facilitates resolution.

Program in Sport Management
The program in sport management at St. John’s University leads to a Bachelor of Science degree and is available on both the Queens and Staten Island campuses in the day and evening divisions. The courses in all these specialized subjects prepare students for entry-level management positions in college and professional sports or in the rapidly growing business of leisure and recreation. Sport management also offers a certificate program which is open to individuals who have completed a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated area.

Career Opportunities
Sports and recreational activities constitute one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Opportunities are available in the management of professional, college, secondary school and community sports, as well as for rewarding careers in the leisure and recreation industries. The sport management degree program provides its graduates with the specialized skills to succeed in a wide range of career choices.
