About the Program

A Bachelor of Science in Television and Film is the foundation for a professional career with a wide range of opportunities in these industries. Students gain the technical, ethical and analytical skills needed to compete in rapidly changing fields.

The program will prepare graduates to:

Demonstrate knowledge of aural and visual literacy as they relate to messages sent through television and/or film.

  • Recognize the role of television and/or film as it relates to contemporary life.
  • Describe how film and/or television “language” communicates to the public.
  • Differentiate how the various media interrelate.
  • Compare and contrast traditional electronic techniques with digital and other new technologies.

Demonstrate knowledge of legal and ethical issues and other regulatory concerns.

  • Describe the role of government regulation of television and film.
  • Describe and analyze the ethical concepts and problems involved in television and/or film.
  • Describe copyright, plagiarism, libel, slander, and invasion of privacy and the effect of each in the television and/or film industry.

Demonstrate knowledge of the practical production processes of designing and creating messages.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of pre-production techniques such as planning, budgeting, scripting, and story boards.
  • Demonstrate competency in a wide range of technologies including audio, video, lighting, computer images, proper use of the camera, and animation, framing, tilting, panning, and zooming.
  • Demonstrate a command of post-production techniques, such as editing, sound design and motion graphics.

Analyze, interpret, and identify the aesthetic theory of the historical and critical aspects of film and/or television.

  • Demonstrate comprehension of and explain basic visual design aspects as they relate to the cinematic and television process and the evolution of change therein..

Demonstrate knowledge of business practices    

  • Demonstrate knowledge of buying, planning, selling and negotiating in the television and film industries.
  • Demonstrate how television and film “pitches” are made.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of FCC regulations, funding, syndication, merchandising and advertising and how they relate to television.

Produce a piece of writing that can be employed in some aspect of the television and/or film industries.

  • Create a screenplay or teleplay, demonstrating competency in the methods, techniques and form for a motion picture or television show, including an understanding of narrative and action.
  • Research and develop copy for a complete advertising or public relations campaign.
  • Demonstrate narrative and non-narrative writing styles, e.g. the ability to write a successful essay or commentary and a screenplay or teleplay.
