What is Television and Film?

Television and film studies is a two-year or four-year program that prepares students for careers in the television or film industries. Students gain the technical, ethical and analytical skills needed to compete in these rapidly changing businesses. A degree in television and film studies is the foundation for a professional life with a wide range of opportunities.

Program in Television and Film
The Associate and Bachelor of Science degrees in television and film studies are designed to offer students considerable flexibility. Students can explore both television and film and the industries of advertising, media graphics, film, journalism, public relations, publishing, television or video production. Students also take courses in hands-on production, media writing, industry organization and procedures, media history and aesthetics.

The industry values professionals with strong business skills, so the program stresses courses in management, marketing and business administration. The program in television and film studies is available on the Queens and Staten Island campuses both in the day and evening divisions, and is based on the Queens campus.

Study at the New York Film Academy
Study film at the prestigious New York Film Academy (NYFA) and earn credit towards your Bachelor’s degree at St. John’s. Students studying at the NYFA can now continue their degree at St. John’s University through the articulation agreement with the Film School. This agreement ensures that credits earned during NYFA’s one-year filmmaking program will be acknowledged by St. John’s College of Professional Studies. Television and film students now have the opportunity to study at one of America’s leading Catholic institutions as well as one of the “most prominent fixtures of film education in the world.”

Career Opportunities
Television and film studies is one of the University’s most exciting programs, leading to important career positions in the communications industry. The entertainment industry is now the second largest revenue producing industry in New York City and New York State. In New York City, media and entertainment gained 10,500 jobs last year, a 6.6% boost. Movie production was up 10%, and broadcasting added 1,700 jobs. Experts predict that communication and entertainment will continue to be areas of employment growth for the next 20 years.
