Throughout the history of photography, photojournalists have
served as the exclusive photographer, whose “art” is to
impress us with views of human activity that would otherwise go
unnoticed.
From Mathew Brady to Joe Rosenthal to Eddie Adams to Dennis
Stock, the photojournalist has shaped the collective conscious by
focusing on a moment in the timeline of human events. Such
images, when executed with a skilled and ready eye, have shattered
cultural barriers, transcended language and defined
generations.
You can prepare for this dynamic profession by earning your
Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Photojournalism at St.
John's. Offered by the College of
Professional Studies (CPS), this 129-credit program
expands professional and educational opportunities for
students who want to major in photojournalism and photography in
general.
Students gain a thorough knowledge of and skill in photography
aesthetics — principles and techniques — as well as an
understanding of the history and objectives of journalism.
Career-oriented and interdisciplinary, the degree fuses critical
areas in photojournalism, visual aesthetics, commercial
photography, documentary filmmaking and multimedia
communications.
The program includes courses across mediums, so students
feel confident pursuing careers as photojournalists, as well
as commercial photographers working in advertising, public
relations and for magazines and online publications. When they
graduate, students are well-prepared for graduate and
professional opportunities in photojournalism and photography
in general.
The program is endorsed by the Magnum Photo Agency, whose
members include such masters as Henry Cartier Bresson, Robert Capa,
W. Eugene Smith, David Alan Harvey, and Paolo Pellegrin, to mention
only a few.
