Staten Island Officers

The Criminal Justice Association honors the Staten Island Officers below who were killed in the line of duty.  
 
Detective Rodney Andrews - 03/10/03 
On March 10, 2003, Detective Rodney Andrews and his partner were killed during a botched gun bust operation. Detective Andrews was killed when the supects attempted to rob the officers of the $1200 in cash they were using to buy an illegal weapon. After shooting Detective Andrews and his partner at the corner of Hannah Street and St. Paul's Avenue, the suspects stole the officers' car. The suspects involved in the shooting were all caught after a massive manhunt, and are awaiting trial.  
  
Detective James Nemorin - 03/10/03 

On March 10, 2003, Detective James Nemorin and his partner were killed during a botched gun bust operation. Police Officer John Kelly - 07/17/00 
On July 17, 2000, Officer John Kelly was fatally injured after his unmarked vehicle crashed into a telephone pole while pursuing a motorcycle with stolen plates. The chase had started after Officer kelly attempted to pull the suspect over on the West Shore Expressway. The suspect sped away, with Officer Kelly in pursuit.  The chase ended with the accident which took the life of the eight-year veteran occurring on the service road next to the Goethals Bridge. The motorcyclist fled the scene, but was later captured and convicted for the death of Officer Kelly.  
 
Police Officer Matthew Dziergowski - 02/14/99 
On February 14, 1999, Officer Matthew Dziergowski was killed after his marked vehicle was struck by another vehicle at the scene of a traffic accident on the West Shore Expressway, near the Outerbridge Crossing.  Officer Dziergowski  had just finished setting up flares at the scene of an accident when a red Dodge Durango approached  at a high rate of speed. Officer Dziergowski saw the vehicle approaching and warned his fellow officers as the SUV struck his patrol car and pushed it into a guard rail. He was flown to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect was apprehended at the scene, and later convicted of Criminally Neglegent Homicide. Officer Dziergowski is survived by his wife and two sons.  
 
Police Officer Gerard Carter - 07/26/98 
On July 26, 1998, Officer Gerard Carter and his partner were attempting to locate a suspect for arrest on a warrant and for questioning on a homicide. While they were sitting in their marked police van in the West Brighton Houses, the suspect  walked up to the vehicle and shot Officer Carter at point blank range in the temple, critically wounding him.  Officer Carter was hospitalized in a coma until his death on July 31, 1998. The suspect was captured hours after the shooting with no further injury or shots fired. Officer Carter is survived by his son, mother and brother.
