About the Program

The Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistant provides the student the opportunity to become a major health care provider.

The program will prepare graduates to:

Demonstrate competency in math, biology, chemistry and knowledge of the physician assistant profession.

  • Demonstrate acquisition of a science and math knowledge base.
  • Explain and apply the scientific method.
  • Describe the physician assistant profession including: history, definition, scope of practice, laws and its place in the health care system.

Demonstrate competency in the biomedical sciences.

  • Describe and explain human anatomy and physiology.
  • Explain the pathology of disease, the essential nature, the causes and the development of abnormal conditions.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of biochemistry

Illustrate and apply the ethical principals of a health care practitioner.

  • Explain the attributes of respect for self and others
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of professional responsibility
  • Explain the concepts of privilege, confidentiality, and informed patient consent.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to patient welfare.

Demonstrate an understanding of medical knowledge.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of pathophysiology, patient presentation, patient management, surgical principals, and health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Demonstrate a core knowledge of biomedical and clinical sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care.
  • Demonstrate an investigatory and analytical approach to clinical situations.

Demonstrate oral and composition communication 

  • Communicate and exchange information within a meaningful context and with appropriate delivery encompassing verbal, non-verbal and written exchange of information.
  • Write cohesively using appropriate medical terminology and anatomical landmarks in an organized and grammatically correct format.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange with patients, families, physicians, professional associates, and the health care system.

Demonstrate fundamental competencies and integration of clinical skills of a physician assistant.

  • Perform age-appropriate patient assessment, evaluation, and management.
  • Demonstrate health care that is effective, patient centered, timely, efficient and equitable for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of wellness.
  • Demonstrate professionalism through a high level of responsibility, ethical practice, sensitivity to a diverse patient population, and adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with other health care professionals and administrative personnel.
