Physician Assistant Program

The St. John’s University Physician Assistant Education Program admitted its first students in 1994 and was accredited in 1995. The first class graduated in 1996.

For St. John’s University matriculated students, the professional phase, of the program (the last two years of the four-year program)  is designed to provide the academic, professional and clinical training for the Primary Care Physician Assistant. This upper division program provides a curriculum and learning atmosphere that promotes problem solving and critical reasoning; fosters the development of attitudes, values and behavior appropriate for competent and compassionate health care; and prepares students to function as valuable members of the health care team. Our goals include training health care providers who reflect the ethnic diversity of our city and motivating our graduates to provide care in underserved areas. Our Mentoring Program addresses the needs of students who have been disadvantaged and under-represented.

The didactic year integrates the basic sciences with the medical, behavioral and social sciences to present a comprehensive introductory approach to patient care. The clinical experience of the second year consists of supervised clinical training by physicians and PAs at St. John's facilities, affiliated hospitals and clinics, as well as private practice settings. During this phase students apply the knowledge gained in their first year of study to further develop and refine their clinical skills.

The St. John's Physician Assistant Education Program prepares individuals to become competent, caring physician assistants who can provide quality health care to patients of all ages. Graduates are eligible to take the National Commission on Certification of PAs Initial Certification Examination ( PANCE). Independent students are awarded a professional certificate while students from St. John's University receive a baccalaureate degree and a professional certificate from the program.
