Screening Exam

All screening exams for our paramedic original class must be pre-scheduled by appointment only; we do not allow walk-in screenings. Only a current NYS EMT will be able to take the multiple choice screening exam.

The cost of the Screening Exam is $100.00 USD, non-refundable payable by money order made out to St. John’s University. You must bring your driver’s license, your valid NYS EMT card and a copy of your high school diploma with you. The screening fee is separate from the tuition.

The written screening exam for the St. John’s University paramedic original program consists of 200 questions of EMT knowledge, Math and Reading comprehension.

Any student stating they have a learning disability requesting additional time must provide the university with an IEP, for any accommodations to be made prior to testing.

If the candidate exceeds the allotted time limit for the exam, this may lead to the exam being invalidated and a grade of zero (0) will be assigned to that exam.  All candidates must be cognizant of their own time.  The proctor will not monitor your time for you.  The computer will show a one minute time warning box in the middle of the screen when the exam is almost out of time. No cell phones, PDA or other electronic devices are allowed.

Upon successful completion of the written exams the candidate will be need to successfully complete a background and drug screening check done by an independent service chosen by the EMS Institute.  The background and drug screening must be done prior to the first day of class, and the fee for that process is $105. If the students back ground check or drug testing comes up with any problems, they will be dealt with on an individual basis and this will preclude them from entering the program.
