The goal of the St. John’s University Emergency Medical Services Institute Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Original Certification Course is to produce competent, entry level EMTs to serve in career and volunteer positions within the State of New York.
At the completion of the course, the graduate will be able to:
- demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate the clinical information relative to the role of an entry level EMT;
- demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role of an entry level EMT; and
- demonstrate personal behaviors consistent with professional and employer expectations for the entry level EMT
The Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) program is 180 hours over approximately 3 or 4 months depending how many days the course is given in the week. The course is broken down into three parts: didactic, skills, and clinical rotations.
All our EMS programs now use interactive on-line learning allowing the student to be able to take quizzes and exams at their leisure and in their home or using our computer center located at the Dr. Bartilucci Center.

Important information for student using the NYS voucher:
Effective September 1, 2009 all students who will be using the NYS Voucher DOH-3312 will be required to have the completed form by the first day of class. This form can be downloaded and filled out by the student and the primary agency representing the student. If the student is an ALS student and the voucher is filled out by a BLS agency, the student will have that voucher rejected.
This is a very demanding training program. Successful completion will lead to a New York State Certification as an EMT-B. The EMT-B Certification is valid for three years. As an EMT-B, you will be able to work in a variety of places. Most graduates work on either 911 ambulances or proprietary ambulances. There are some hospitals that employee EMT-B's in the emergency room. This training is a excellent foundation on which to build a career in medicine.
