Abu Serajuddin, Ph.D, joined St. John’s University in September
2008 as Professor of Industrial Pharmacy, after working three
decades in the pharmaceutical industry, in both scientific and
managerial positions. He is internationally recognized for his
contribution to pharmaceutical sciences, especially in the area of
formulation design and development. In 2010, he received AAPS
Research Achievement Award in Formulation Design and Development,
one of the highest awards given by the American Association of
Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS).
After
joining the pharmaceutical industry as an Associate Senior
Scientist for Revlon Health Care (later part of Aventis through
mergers) in 1976, Serajuddin rose to the position of
Director/Executive Director and the US Head of Drug Product
Development for Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. in 1999. Later, from
2003 to 2008, he served as the Executive Director of Science,
Technology & Outsourcing for the company with the global
responsibility of developing pharmaceutical technologies, managing
science and technology (Global Head, Science & Technology
Forum), and outsourcing pharmaceutical product development and
pharmaceutical analysis (US only).
During his scientific career in the pharmaceutical industry, he
formulated and developed numerous products, many with extremely
difficult and challenging development issues. Several products that
he developed or co-developed attained blockbuster status in the
market. In 2005, Novartis named him Novartis Leading Scientist, a
top honor bestowed by the company, for extraordinary contribution
to the development and growth of the company through scientific
excellence.
