GLOBE Marks a Successful Semester

November 26, 2012

Student managers and the faculty director of Tobin’s Global Loan Opportunities for Budding Entrepreneurs (GLOBE) program, Dr. Linda Sama, celebrated another successful semester with GLOBE donors, friends and patrons during their Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at St. Vincent’s Café on the Queens Campus.

Festivities opened with an invocation by GLOBE Steering Committee member, Mary Ann Dantuono, an introduction by TCB Dean Victoria Shoaf, and opening remarks by Dr. Linda Sama.  After the lunch catered by Bayside Milk Farm, the audience enjoyed a video montage prepared by the students, a GLOBE jeopardy challenge and an inspirational speech from program alumna, Jessica Lazo ‘09TCB, who was in the spring 2009 inaugural class of GLOBE.

“You never know where life will take you,” said Lazo. “My path began at St. John’s where I met Muhammad Yunus in the spring of 2009. Through meeting him and working with my mentor, I was inspired to attend law school where I became a member of the Immigration Rights Clinic. GLOBE opened my eyes to the true meaning of giving back.”

Lazo currently works with the Deferred Action Policy for the Obama Administration and the Catholic Charities Community Services for the Archdiocese of New York’s Department of Immigrant and Refugee Services helping young refugees, victims of violence and victims of human trafficking rebuild their lives and become productive members of society.

During the fall semester, the students raised approximately $500 that will be used to help future borrowers through bake sales and creating new promotional pieces.

“GLOBE allowed me to help people and have a solid impact on the end result. I’ve been able to come up with business ideas that haven’t been utilized and develop ways to pitch the program so others can understand our mission. After this experience, I know that it’s more than just about helping people. It’s about bettering yourself,” said Sally Ren, a management major on the Accounting, Audits and Enterprise Development team. Claire Cilento, an economics major on the Marketing and Fundraising team adds “This class is a great combination of academics and application. Being on the marketing team gave me the opportunity to organize and implement our ideas. I will take the skills that I learned like time management and team work into other aspects of my life as I build my career.”

GLOBE currently operates in four countries: Kenya, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Vietnam; and has connections with Daughters in six other countries: Bolivia, Ghana, Mozambique, Madagascar, Peru and Thailand. Dr. Sama has plans to expand the program to other countries in the near future.
