Dr. Margaret Abraham is Professor
Sociology and Special Advisor to Provost for Diversity Initiatives
at Hofstra University, New York. She is the Vice President,
Research of the International Sociological Association
(2010-2014). She also serves as the American Sociological
Assocation Representative to the International Sociological
Association for 2012-2014.
Her teaching and research interests
include gender, ethnicity, globalization, immigration, and domestic
violence. Dr. Abraham has been involved in research and
activism in the field of domestic violence in the South Asian
immigrant community for nearly 20 years.
She is the author of Speaking the
Unspeakable: Marital Violence Among South Asian
Immigrants in the United States (Rutgers University press
2000) which won the American Sociological Assocation:
Section on Asian and Asian America Outstanding Book Award in
2002. Also, she is the co-editor of Contours of
Citzenship: Women, Diversity and the Practices of
Citzenship (Ashate2010), and has published in prestigious
academic journals likeGender &
Society, Violence Against Women, Social Justice, and Indian Journal
of Gender Studies.
