The Just One Person Academic Lecture series next presents Kerry Docherty, Founder of Mindful Mentors, this coming Thursday, October 25, during Common Hour, 1:50-3:15 in DAC 206.
As before in this series, the presentation features the story of one who is "making a difference in the world". Kerry Docherty is a young woman - not much older than our students - who has chosen a life path that is unique.
After graduating from Yale University with a B.A. in psychology, she received her J.D. from Pepperdine Law School, and obtained a Certificate in Trauma Studies form the International Trauma Studies Program in New York City, where she studied psychosocial resiliency and coping capacities after traumatic events. She conducted human rights fact-finding missions in Thailand, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria, Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh, and the Thai-Burma border, and served as a law clerk for the Honorable Judge Joan Azrack in the Eastern District of New York. She has completed mindfulness training from UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, the Insight Center, Wat Singpong in Thailand, and the OMEGA Institute. A contributor to Darling Magazine, and winner of Donna Karan’s Women: Inspiration and Enterprise essay writing contest, she is currently writing a book titled Enoughness, The Struggle to Feel Complete as We Are.
In Kerry’s presentation, she will share her story about her journey to feel “enough.” Despite accumulating myriad accolades, throughout most of her life, Kerry still felt burdened by self-doubt. Realizing that her life was confined to an endless ladder climb, she began to explore fundamental tools used to build resilience and contentment in everyday life. Through her international travel, trauma studies, and individual mindfulness practice, she became an avid believer that each of us already has the ability to cultivate calm in chaos. Besides telling her story, she will invite the class to partake in a few mindfulness exercises guaranteed to reduce stress.
These are skills from which our students can truly benefit and I ask you to encourage your students to attend. You too!!! Here is an animated presentation that includes all pertinent info: http://goo.gl/Ep6yV
