History

The St. John’s Queens Campus chapter of Psi Chi was established in 1964. Major programs hosted by Psi Chi, such as graduate school and career planning workshops, have been going on yearly since the organization’s establishment. Psi Chi also plans academic lectures and socials to which all members of St. John’s University are invited to.  The Psi Chi Christmas Party and Psi Chi memorabilia (sweatshirts, mugs) are two fond memories of Dr. Alice Powers, a former faculty moderator for Psi Chi. “In 1994, for the 30th anniversary of the St. John’s chapter of Psi Chi, we invited all of the alumni back for that year’s induction with the help of the Alumni Office. We had a good number of alumni come back and it was a big party.”

Psi Chi used to program events and hold general body meetings with what was then called the Psychology Club. The Psychology Club did not have academic standards of which were needed to be met by members, which is the major difference between the two. The Psychology Club is now known as the Student Psychological Association and although they are separate organizations under St. John’s Student Government, Inc., Psi Chi and the Student Psychological Association still co-sponsor events together.

Psi Chi has monthly general body meetings during common hour (Mondays and Thursdays at 1:50 pm) in Marillac room 434.
