Mission
In a certain sense, we are all mathematicians since we all learn to count, and we use numbers in some way every day in our lives. But what is mathematics? It is the mission of the st. John's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science to explain what mathematics actually is to our students through a thorough and structures examination of its history, philosophy and applications. The Mathematics Program, both at the undergraduate and at the graduate level, aims to develop a sense of inquiry into mathematics, while, at the same time, sharpening critical thinking skills. From the practical side, the Department seeks to prepare students for such careers in mathematics as teaching, acuarial science and financial analysis. It endeavors to equip each mathematics student with the necessary foundation to continue study at the graduate level.
