Bienvenidos!
Students in the Spanish program learn skills in writing and in
speaking, knowledge of important aspects of Spanish civilization
including geography, history, art, social customs, cuisine,
business practices and the political life of Spain. Students become
familiar with Spanish literature and analysis of texts from
original works. They learn the art of creative writing and
journalism and publish their works with faculty members in literary
journals.
Students who opt for a teaching career are encouraged to take a
course in the Methodology of Foreign Language Teaching. All
students are encouraged to participate in summer abroad programs in
Argentina and in Spain, specifically trips to Cádiz and Madrid,
where they can master important linguistic, cultural and social
skills in addition to course work. There are also internships
in this country in local Spanish institutions.
Spanish B.A.
33 semester hours, including SPA 3090 and SPA 3100 (Masterpieces of
Hispanic Literature I and II, SPA 3550(Civilization of Spain), SPA
3560(Civilization of Spanish America), SPA 3870 and SPA 3880 (
Advanced Spanish Grammar and Composition I and II). And 15
Elective hours in other advanced Spanish Literature courses.
We encourage double majors.
Spanish B.A./M.A.
Spanish BA/ MA Accelerated Program- The Department of Languages and
Literatures offers an intensive accelerated combined degree program
leading to both the BA and MA degrees in Spanish in five years of
Full time study. The program is aimed at encouraging
academically qualified undergraduate students who have demonstrated
potential for success in graduate study. Sophomores who have
completed 12 credits in Spanish with an index of 3.5 or higher and
a minimum of 3.0 cumulative index are encouraged to apply.
After completion of the baccalaureate degree the student must
enroll full time on the graduate level for the fifth year.
