A Language and Culture Rich
with Tradition
Urbem fecisti, quod prius orbis erat. (You made of what
was once a city – the world)Claudius Rutilius
Namatianus, Hymn to Rome, V century ADAccording
to UNESCO, nearly 60% of the world's cultural patrimony is housed
within the confines of Italy. Rome, the cradle of civilization and
the seat of Christendom is the nation’s capital where the St.
John’s University Italian study abroad program is situated.
Italy’s ties to Rome brought her to the forefront of civilization
in the high Middle Ages through the Renaissance
(Rinascimento). Today, Italy continues to impact the global scene
in its contributions to fields such as art, music, fashion, food,
wine, literature and science.Italy is a founding member of the
EU, the G8 and the G20 and harbors one of the highest
concentrations of NATO and US bases in the world. Why
Italian?Career opportunities abound for professionals with Italian
language skills. More than 1,000 U.S. firms have offices in Italy,
where an estimated 7,500 American companies do business. Italy
enjoys a booming tourist industry with millions visiting Rome each
year. Italian language and culture courses continue to grow in
schools throughout the United States. Every year tens of thousands
of students of all ages choose to study the Italian language,Italy
