The Department of Languages and Literatures offers a wide
variety of language, literature and civilization courses at the
undergraduate level.
Language Credits
A maximum of 6 credits will be granted to incoming students who
have successfully passed the Advanced Placement Exam in French or
Spanish. These credits may be applied towards a major or minor in
the language. CLEP credits may not be applied toward
fulfillment of SJU core language requirements.
Language Majors and Minors
Four degree-granting programs are available:
Minors are offered in Classical Studies, French, Italian,
Italian Studies, German*, Modern Greek*, Linguistics, Russian* and
Spanish.
*for languages, with an asterisk a minor is left to the
discretion of the instructor who will have to provide independent
study courses for the completion of the minor.
In addition to the above-listed degree granting programs the
Department offers a wide range of undergraduate courses in Modern
and Classical Greek, Latin, German, Linguistics, Russian,
Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Language and Culture, Portuguese and the
Classics.
Major and Minor Requirements
A language major consists of 33 credits of course work above levels
4/5 of the language of choice. The language minor consists of 18
credits of study in the language of choice.

Interdisciplinary Majors and Minors
Students often combine these degrees with appropriate
education minor courses and receive 7-12 teaching
certification.
The Department, in conjunction with the Peter J. Tobin College
of Business, also offers students the opportunity to major in a
foreign language (French, Italian or Spanish) with a complementary
concentration in International Business (LMB). International
Business majors can obtain proficiency in a foreign language within
the same program.

International Studies Program
The Department has just designed an International Studies Program
which will allow students to major or minor in International
Studies in order to prepare for careers in education, government,
international trade, international organizations, community
development and human services.

Courses in Chinese, Japanese and Korean are also offered by the
Institute of Asian Studies.
