ESL Placement Test

ESL Placement Testing
Students whose first language is not English have their language and academic credentials evaluated by the admissions office at the time of their application.   The TOEFL IBT is a primary indicator of who needs to take the St. John’s University ESL Placement Test.  Scores between 60 and 100 on the IBT indicate that the student may need to have additional training in English to be successful in his/her studies.  As such, students who score between 60 and100 IBT are given admission to the university with the condition that they take the ESL placement test.  After taking the test, if so indicated by the results of the test, students are given ESL classes (link to ESL class listings) that they are required to take along with their regular classes.  There is no fee for this exam.

Undergraduate students
Undergraduate students who are required to take ESL classes are given 3 credit hours per class.  These classes also fulfill the language requirement for undergraduate students.

Graduate Students
:
Graduate students who need to take ESL classes along with their regular graduate classes are given 3 credit hours per class toward full time student status to fulfill visa requirements.  The classes, however, do not count towards credit in fulfilling the requirements of the masters program in which the student is enrolled.
