History

Led by 14 full-time faculty members with Ph.D. degrees earned from leading universities of Europe and America, the St. John's University Department of History teaches the histories of America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. It provides courses with urban, ethnic, gender, geographic, international relations, local, military, history of religion, and public history themes, and offers an array of degree programs, including undergraduate major and minor B. A. concentrations, M. A. and M. A. / B. A. degrees in history, and a full interdisciplinary doctorate in Modern World History (D. A.). The faculty's research, publishing, editorial, consulting, and outreach activities have given it a high profile both locally and internationally.
 
The History Department aims to broaden the cultural horizons and historical perspectives of its students, while providing an array of analytical skills. The undergraduate programs for majors and minors are designed to develop depth of historical and multicultural vision, as well as analytical and writing skills useful in all walks of life. The higher degrees are excellent preparation for professional careers in education, government, business, law, information services, diplomacy and international relations professions, social and community work, museum and public outreach professions, and teaching at all levels, as well as advanced work in academics.
