Alumni

In the last four decades, over five hundred students have graduated from the Institute of Asian Studies' Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. programs. The following are just some of them:

Mr. Jui-te Ching, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in 1983, is Associate Chair of the Municipal Representative Assembly of the City of Kaohsiung in Taiwan.

Ms. Gloria Wan-ching Chu, who received her M.A. in Asian Studies in 1981, was appointed Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Central Broadcasting Station, a major media conglomerate in Taiwan, in 1997.

Ms. Allison Dyess graduated from the M.A. in Chinese Studies program in Fall 1996 and just graduated from Brooklyn Law School.

Mr. Jack Han, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in 1970's, was First Vice-President of Republic National Bank and concurrently Manager of the bank's branch office on Roosevelt Avenue in Flushing, N.Y. Currently he is in D.A. in Modern World History program at St. John's.

Mr. Goanpyo Hong graduated from the M.A. program in Summer 1998. Currently, he is in Ph.D. program in Japanese Linguistics, UCLA.

Ms. Wei-shan Huang graduated from the M.A. program in Spring 1996 and is in Ph.D. program in Sociology, New School of Social Research.

Sister Margaret Kelly, who was one of the earliest students of Dr. Paul Sih, is the Director of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society at St. John's University.

Ms. Lin Yuann Kuo, who received her M.A. in Asian Studies in 1979, owns and operates a very successful chain of restaurants and hotels hardhearted in Atlanta, Georgia, where she is a well-known personality in the Atlanta business community.

Dr. Hung Le graduated from the D.A. program in 2005. Currently, he is teaching courses for the Institute and the History Department at St. John's University.

Ms. Sharon Lee graduated from the M.A. program in Spring 1998 and just graduated from St. John's Law School.

Mr. Chen-hui Lin graduated from the M.A. program in Spring 1994. Currently, he is in D.A. program in Modern World History, St. John's University and also teaches Chinese in High school.

Mr. Jacob Lin graduated from the M.A. program in Spring 1996 and is in Ph.D. program in Political Science at CUNY. 
 
Mr. Tien I. Lin, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in 1994, is the Director of the Chinese Cultural Center in San Diego.

Mr. Yi-chun Lin, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in 1995, is an instructor in the Department of Chinese Literature at Fujen University in Taiwan and concurrently a Ph.D. candidate in the same department.

Professor David Chien-shun Liu, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in the 1970s, is Chairman of the Advertising Department at Chinese Cultural University in Taiwan.

Prof. John Metzler received his M.A. in Asian Studies in 1960's and currently is an adjunct instructor for the Institute of Asian Studies and the Department of Government and Politics at St. John's.

Ms. Maxin Nakamura graduated from the M.A. program in Spring 1998. She just graduated from Syracuse Law School and currently is working for a law firm in Manhattan.

Dr. Murray Rubinstein, who was a student in Asian Studies in the 1960s, is currently a professor of History at Baruch College, CUNY.

Professor Tse-hsiung Shih, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in 1979, is a Professor of the East Asian Institute at National Chengchi University in Taiwan.

Dr. Chin-tang Tsai, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in 1980, is Professor of History at Tamkong University in Taiwan.

Mr. Kenneth K'ang-sheng Tsai, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in 1994, is Director of the Chinese Cultural Center in London, England.

Mr. Nien-chung Tu, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in the 1980s, is Associate Editor-in-Chief of China Times, one of the leading daily newspapers in Taiwan.

Ms. Cheng-hwa Wang, who received her M.A. in Asian Studies in 1976, is a Vice President of Bankers Trust Company in New York City. She has charge of the bank's Global Security System.

Ms. Shan-Ching Wang graduated from the M.A. program in Spring 2002 and is in D.A. in Modern World History, St. John's University.

Mr. Barry Wickman, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in 1974, has been appointed by the Jewish community in Shanghai to set up an international kindergarten and pre-school in Shanghai. An interview with him, "In New Era, Jews Turn to Shanghai Again," was published in the New York Times of December 14, 1997.

Dr. An-chia Wu, who received his M.A. in Asian Studies in 1978, is Associate Director of the Institute of International Relations at National Chengchi University in Taiwan.

Mr. Jin Wu graduated from the M.A. program in Spring 1997 and currently is in Ph.D. program in Asian Studies, University of Oregon.
