Academic Resources

Students majoring in Environmental Studies (Social Science) at St. John's gain a solid foundation in the theory and application of the environmental sciences in relation to social and ethical issues. They learn and are mentored by an enormously gifted, internationally known faculty of scholar-teachers who care about each student's progress.

Environmental Studies majors enhance their education by joining the Earth Club, which works to improve the environment and build campus awareness. Club members participate in the University’s Organic Food Garden and help recycle through technologies such as the A500 Rocket® model food composter technology.  St. John’s is the first university to employ this technology.

Environmental Studies students also have access to practical experience with departmental field trips to Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC) Wetlands Nature Preserve and Windmill Pond Ecological Restoration Project as well as acclaimed internships at leading agencies and corporations throughout the metropolitan area.

A strong academic and professional edge can be gained by joining any of St. John's other more than 180 student clubs, organizations and honor societies. Organizations of particular interest to Environmental Studies majors include these:

  • Roger Bacon Scientific Honors Society: Honor society for biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, psychology or environmental studies
  • Omicron Delta Epsilon:  International honor society for economics
  • Alpha Zappa Delta: International honor society

The Skull and Circle Honor Society and the Lambda Kappa Phi Honor Society annually select students from St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who combine scholarship, integrity and dedicated service to the St. John's community.

Every student at St. John's benefits from outstanding University-wide facilities and resources. For example, all new students receive their own wireless laptop computer with full access to the University's award-winning network.

All students take advantage of St. John’s location in dynamic New York City.
