Vast environmental challenges face society today — including
climate change, pollution and sustainability. The ecology of our
planet is more important than ever before. At St. John’s
University, students gain the academic, research and industry
skills needed to succeed in careers related to these
challenges.
To prepare you for these opportunities, the Environmental
Studies Department in St. John's College of
Liberal Arts and Sciences offers an
interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts Degree Program in
Environmental Studies with a Social Science concentration. (The
department also offers a
Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Environmental Studies
with a concentration in Ecology.)
Through the 126-credit program in Environmental Studies (Social
Science), you’ll discover a conservational approach to improving
the balance between humans and nature. The program allows
students to analyze the moral, political, social and scientific
approaches to environmental studies.
Courses combine the applied and social sciences for a complete
understanding of the issues and challenges surrounding
sustainability efforts. The program covers a broad range of
selected science and social science courses, including Physics,
Chemistry,
Biology,
geography, geology,
Anthropology,
Physical Science and more. The B.A. degree emphasizes social
sciences and the humanities, with a special focus on philosophical
and theological perspectives. (The B.S degree focuses on a natural
sciences approach, incorporating mathematics, biology, chemistry
and the physical sciences with consideration for the social
sciences.)
