Department of Physics - Sigma Pi Sigma Alumni Colloquium, Jamaica Campus

November 10, 2010 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Sun Yat Sen Hall, Faculty Club

This event is a colloquium held by the Sigma Pi Sigma Honor Society that will feature alumni speakers, featuring the exciting new advances the Physics Department has made over the past 10 years.

Understanding that the world does not apportion neatly into one discipline or another, the Physics Department has expanded its programs and now offers diverse majors including Physics, Math/Physics, Physical Sciences, Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. The curriculum was also revised to meet standards of Physics departments of other major universities.

The result of these changes is a dramatic increase in student enrollment in the program, nearly twentyfold, to its current size of more than 80 students. An active student chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) and Sigma-Pi-Sigma, the national Physics Honor Society was established. Most of our students graduate with research training, and a number of students continue on to prestigious schools and national labs for graduate study.

Current research is being conducted on the fields of applied physics including nanotechnology, biophysics and biomedical, and energy and new materials. Students and faculty present their scientific findings at national and international conferences and meetings. Faculty members of the physics department have published more than 50 papers in the past 10 years in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. St. John’s University faculty have also built 3 high quality laboratories (2 for imaging, 1 for materials) that are equipped with high technology equipment that only exist in major universities such as Columbia, NYU and Cornell. The Physics Department also plans to launch a graduate program in the near future.

These advances are not without the help of our valuable physics alumni that have continued after graduation to pursue various careers. The Physics Department invites our alumni back to campus to share your experiences in your education and career with current physics students.
