McKee High School Experience

This spring, a partnership between St. John’s University and Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High School fostered a reciprocal learning experience, as both university and high school students had the opportunity to work with and learn from each other.  St. John’s University students enrolled in Language Acquisition and Literacy/Adolescence, taught by Dr. Sandra Abrams, visited McKee High School on a weekly basis to tutor students enrolled in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. With the assistance from Vice Principal Joe O’Brien and AVID teacher Lou Lucci, St. John’s students learned about the AVID program, facilitated student-driven learning, and utilized techniques addressed in the university classroom.  In addition, St. John’s students worked in conjunction with history teacher, Mr. Cohen, English teacher, Mrs. Pezzolo, and math teacher, Mr. Scotti, and planned and executed lessons using a variety of pedagogical methods and resources. Just as the cooperation and collaboration between St. John’s and McKee enabled university students to develop a meaningful rapport with students, honor differentiated instruction, and refine their practice, so, too, did it engage McKee students in meaningful learning experiences and provide students models for higher education. Overall, the St. John’s and McKee students formed real connections by sharing ideas and learning from and respecting each other.
