B.S. Ed. Childhood Education and Childhood Special Education

The program develops graduates with skills in a range of relevant pedagogical methods for teaching and learning and strategies for devising, implementing and assessing learning experiences in teaching elementary education.

The program will prepare graduates to:

Demonstrate the acquisition of fundamental principles of education, and human development.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of theories of educational philosophy and the historical trends in educational trends and movements
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical and practical underpinning of human development and educational psychology as it pertains to classroom management and individual student growth.

Demonstrate knowledge of instructional practices, approaches, methods and materials to support  instruction in the classroom.

  • Demonstrate the fundamental knowledge necessary to present information in the major academic disciplines: language and literacy, mathematics, science, art and music, and social studies
  • Design instructional methods, including computer-based practices, for learners at different stages of development and various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate the ability to utilize these instructional practices, approaches, methods and materials in the student teaching experience

Demonstrate the fundamental principles of inclusive education and multicultural education across both program configurations.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of human relations
  • Identify theories and models for teaching, gifted and talented students, diverse learners, students who are bilingual and at-risk students.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the foundations of special education
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the methods of special education

Demonstrate the ability to work with individuals and groups in the elementary school setting. 

  • Observe master teachers in their classrooms as an introduction to schools in a variety of the surrounding communities
  • Participate as an associate teacher in the an approved teaching assignment under continuous  university supervision
  • Prepare at least three full lessons per associate teacher assignment in order to be observed and assessed for skill and knowledge

Interpret and apply standards of professional and state organizations.

  • Integrate principles of ethical behavior into teaching and learning
  • Apply New York Learning Standards and New York State Content Standards into teaching and learning
  • Use the research, best practices and findings of professional organizations to strengthen professional practice.

Demonstrate the Vincentian value of service to the field of education as it applies to teaching and learning.

  • Create opportunities for students to learn how to be of service in their communities through school projects
  • Model service orientation to the community by participating in parent, family and community events
