As I looked around, I saw many children napping. The rigors of
playing with our group, climbing on our backs, and being lifted up
as high as our arms can stretch, exhausted their energy. I could
not help feel the wave of exhaustion bombard me. However, when I
turned to the child I was playing with, her smile and her wide eyes
rejuvenated my depleting battery. Suddenly, a burst of energy
overcame me. It was our time to play “Phone Call”. Engulfed in our
game, I did not notice Ms. Foukalas and Dean Willis entering the
school with four giant shopping bags. Struggling to carry them to
the middle of the room, a procession of shopping bags followed.
This routine did not end until half of the room was filled with
clothing and food that the School of Education raised for this
school. Later, I would learn that the school was running out of
food for the children and they needed clothes for home. Yet, in the
present, I was amazed by how much our donations provided to the
children and the school. As we said our “goodbyes”, tears from the
principal’s eyes flowed with the same energy the children displayed
when we were playing with them. My immediate thought was to comfort
her and share in the feeling of joy. The tears she shed were not of
sadness but of joy. For once, she can provide her children with the
necessary nutrients and clothing needed to see them grow. Just like
how the little girl’s energy enveloped me, her tears were
contagious. I, too, had to shed a tear of joy and happiness. This
was the moment where I knew what life should be about. Two perfect
strangers sharing a tear of joy and happiness – showing the world
that care and generosity can conquer.
