St. John’s School Of Law Featured In New York Law Journal Magazine

October 26, 2006

The St. John’s University School of Law is one of the fifteen New York State law schools featured in the October 23rd issue of the New York Law Journal Magazine. The issue dubbed “Canvassing the Campuses” contains a three-page article with snapshots and fast facts about the Law School, a profile of current Law School Dean Mary C. Daly, and expert commentary by Associate Academic Dean Andrew J. Simons and former Dean of the School of Law, the Hon. Joseph W. Bellacosa.

The article further explores specific programming related to the St. John’s Elder Law Clinic and The Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development and spotlights Professor Brian Z. Tamanaha (and his upcoming book “Law as a Means to an End: Threat to the Rule of Law”) and Leonard M. Baynes (Director of the The Ronald H. Brown Center).

“The New York Law Journal should be congratulated for its impressive effort in profiling the New York State law schools, each of which is rich in history and tradition,” said Daly. “St. John’s profile, with its focus on our Elder Law Clinic, is especially timely since we celebrated the opening of our new clinical offices just last week. The cost of construction was over $1.2 million.”

Author Thomas Adcock, senior writer for the New York Law Journal, penned the entire issue after traversing the State of New York to explore the nuances in the different programs that each law school offers its students. Adcock spent a day on the Queens campus at St. John’s this past summer, touring the facilities and speaking with several law school professors and administrators.

Daly observed that the profile captures the innovation and excitement that permeates all aspects of the Law School community.  “We are moving on an upward trajectory, no doubt about it,” she said, noting that this year’s entering class has the highest credentials in the history of St. John’s Law School.

In addition, Daly pointed to the current construction of a new Professional Skills Center scheduled to open in spring 2007 as further testimony to the Law School’s commitment to providing its students with the best legal education possible.”
