Catholic High School Students Get Inside Look at St. John’s School of Law

November 17, 2006

Students from Catholic High Schools within the Diocese of Brooklyn attended St. John’s University School of Law’s Catholic High School Law Day, an event sponsored by the Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development and Msgr. McClancy Memorial High School, on Saturday, November 11

Almost 80 students took advantage of the unique opportunity, which gave teenagers an inside look at becoming a lawyer.  Students representing eight different high schools took part in a panel discussion moderated by School of Law Professor Leonard M. Baynes, which addressed several important questions to consider when thinking about a career in law.

The panelists – Kristopher Cartagena, third year law student at St. John’s and President of the Latin American Law Students Association; JoAnn Longobardi, Associate, Golenbock Eiseman Assor Bell & Peskoe LLP; Gerard DiConza ’94, Partner DiConza Law P.C. and Roberto C. Martens ’03, Associate, Nixon Peabody LLP – went on to answer questions on topics ranging from influences to the necessary grades for admission to law school and the challenges of being a female in the field.

Admissions counselors from St. John’s School of Law and undergraduate admissions counselors met with the students to address admissions concerns and Theresa Conway, Career Center Advisor, offered career advice to the students in attendance.

Hon. Patricia P. Satterfield ’77 presented the keynote address in the afternoon during lunch.  The day concluded with a Mock Law Class presented by Professor Michael A. Simons, in addition to the Polestino Trial Advocacy Institute conducting a Mock Trial based on The Queen vs. Dudley and Stephens, a case from 1884.
