McKee High School Experience at The School of Education Staten Island Campus

April 29, 2010

Staten Island Campus -

On Thursday, April 29th, 28 students from McKee High School and two administrators were welcomed onto St. John's University’s Staten Island campus as part of a partnership program between the two schools.  Students from Dr. Sandra Abrams’ Language Acquisition and Literacy course worked with McKee’s AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program participants in a cooperative and engaging session to expose them to a college setting.  This event assisted in reinforcing the program’s message of college preparatory skills development, and was the culmination of a semester-long collaboration between the schools, where students at St. John's University assisted at McKee as tutors for the AVID program.

The event was held in DaSilva 110, the newly designed Adolescent Education learning resource classroom.  A number of School of Education students were present, where they were able to further apply their skills acquired in both the field and classroom, and witness the development of their experiences with these students.  The administrators and students at McKee High School both had a wonderful experience, and the partnership will continue with additional classes in the future.
