Course Description
An examination of the role of the mass media in significant
aspects of contemporary life as they relate to culture, politics
and education.
Radio, television, newspapers, film, advertising and public
relations constitute the mass media. Communications in Society
introduces the student to all of these media and to their influence
on the American culture. Students will also learn of the different
career paths that the media can offer.
Every day, our lives are affected by the media. We begin our
days by listening to our favorite radio station or reading the
sports section of the newspaper over breakfast; we watch our
favorite programs from soap operas to millionaire shows; we go to
the movies with our friends and we read magazines as we ride the
subways or wait for our dental appointments. Throughout all of
this, advertising subtly pervades all of these media and influences
the way we shop, the way we dress and the way we speak.
The Communications industry plays a major role in the economy of
New York City. As the Number One market in the United States, New
York City houses the major Advertising Agencies and Public
Relations offices along Madison Avenue; the Mayor's Office of
Television and Film issues the permits needed for the numerous
movies and television shows that are shot on New York City streets;
our television stations are considered the flagship stations for
the major networks both commercial and non-commercial: NBC, ABC,
CBS, Fox and PBS.
This course will cover all of these topics in addition to
discussing the influences, both good and bad, that the media exert
over our lives including privacy issues, violence in society and
the effects of media on our children.
