St. John’s University’s Office of Online Learning and Services offers formal training for faculty to teach distance learning courses at the University. Successful completion of the “Distance Learning Pedagogy I” course is the primary method for receiving certification to teach any of the University’s fully online or mixed mode courses. Consult your chair before registering for this course to confirm that your department will schedule you to teach online or mixed mode in the near future. Please note, the Office of Online Learning and Services does not make decisions regarding faculty appointments. Three to four hours per week of online participation is required for six weeks to complete the certification. Upon successful completion of the course and after teaching a fully online course with assistance from a Distance Learning mentor, the university will provide a one-time stipend of $1,000 to the participant. Participation in this course is asynchronous which means that there will be no face-to-face sessions or required date and or times when you will need to be ‘logged-in’ to the online course. You can participate at days and times that are convenient for your schedule, however please note that all course assignment deadlines as posted in the syllabus must be met. Participants enrolling in this course must meet rudimentary computer proficiency skills such as logging in, cutting and pasting text using word processing software and attaching documents to e-mails.
Prior course participants who did not finish are encouraged to reenroll. The Spring Distance Learning Pedagogy 1 course begins Monday, March 19, 2012 and ends Friday, April 27, 2012 . The registration period is from February 6 through March 9, 2012. To enroll, please complete this form. If you need additional information, please contact Elizabeth Alexander at (718) 990-2353.
