Prof. Cloherty  received a B.A. in Mathematics from St. Joseph's College for Women in Brooklyn, New York and an M.A. in Mathematics from St. John's University, Jamaica, New York.  She is currently working on acquiring an Ed.D. in Mathematics Education at Teachers College,  Columbia University. 

Since September 2000, Helen has been an Assistant Professor at St John's University in Jamaica, New York, in the Division of Computer Science, Math and Science of the College of Professional Studies.  She teaches 2 online mathematics courses -  Introduction to College Math I and Introduction  to College Math II.  Prof Cloherty has taught these courses on campus as well as the first required courses in the computer science major:  Structured Programming Techniques and Data Structures. She now also is teaching Java and the World Wide Web. 

Professor Cloherty has taught math and computer science in grades 7 through 12 in the public schools of New York City and Westchester County for over 30 years.   She has a special interest in promoting a larger role for women in mathematics, science and computer science.  She has appeared as a panelist at a technology conference of ABIT (Academy of Business and Information Technology) in April of 2003.  The topic was "Women in Technology."

Prof Cloherty is currently doing research in the teaching of mathematics in diverse cultures.  She presented a paper in May 2003 at a local conference of the MAA (Mathematics Association of America) on mathematics teacher training in Puerto Rico, having just returned from a study trip to the island.  In this pursuit she also went to  Russia in November 2000 and visited several elementary schools, high schools and teacher training colleges in St.  Petersburg and Moscow. 

Prof. Cloherty is a faculty advisor to computer science majors in the College of Professional Studies.  She is currently a member of several professional associations, among them: the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the local chapter of the Mathematics Association of America, the Academy of Business and Information Technology and the New York State Association for Computers and Technologies in Education.
