The Many Faces of Cyber-bullying: A Multidisciplinary Response

November 15, 2013
8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

There seems to be no limits as to how far cyber-bullying can reach, how pervasive it can become and how many lives it can affect. The predatory nature of cyber-bullying renders those targeted with a sense of helplessness and feeling of utter violation of their personal space and, above all, no place to hide. There are many the stories of attempts or successful suicides, as well as stories of violent incidents of revenge against those who have victimized and robbed those being targeted of their dignity, following such violation. But there are other less extreme consequences resulting from an experience of cyber-bullying, which force the individual to retrieve from school, society, from friends, etc., feeling ashamed and belittled by the cyber-experience, leaving them with a strong feeling of betrayal when those who claim to be their friends are the perpetuators.

Thus, we are left with many questions as to how should we respond as individual, society, educational institutions, legal system, media, etc. It is clear that we are at a very important juncture where all the members of our society are called upon to join forces in seeking some solutions to what has now become an urgent call for action. Being that there are many factors involved in the emergence and maintenance of this destructive phenomenon we need then equal involvement/ engagement of these different sectors of our society in seeking solutions.
