Message from the Dean

Michael Sampson, Ph.D., Dean, The School of Education

Welcome to our website and to the School of Education.

On behalf of the St. John’s School of Education’s faculty, staff and alumni, I welcome you to our site and invite you to explore our many programs and opportunities. Whether you plan on working at a local, national or global level, we support your interest and pursuits in the diverse and rewarding field of education, where you can impact and make significant differences in the lives of the students/clients you engage with.

Our highly regarded and nationally accredited School of Education (SOE) offers more than 40 degree programs; preparing teachers at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels of study, as well as certificate programs in the areas of education and human services. Here in the SOE, faculty strive to challenge and prepare students to work with diverse perspectives and values and to foster student knowledge, skills and attitudes that will contribute to the education of the students they will serve.

Our global community - encompassing campuses in New York and Rome, as well as partnerships from Europe to Asia – is actively exploring and working together to offer our students the world’s most innovative and powerful programs.

Our vision involves drawing on the best practices of the past, experimenting with and researching new ideas, and helping professionals to assume their roles as leaders in education. Our mission is to prepare competent and committed professionals who will make positive differences for children, young adults, and others in schools.

Our TEAC national accreditation is a tribute to the quality of our academic programs. Accreditation of schools of education indicates that the university underwent rigorous external review by professionals, that performance of a teacher candidate in the program has been thoroughly assessed before he or she is recommended for licensure, and that programs meet standards set by the teaching profession at large.

As the new dean of the School of Education, I am excited about my role in both leading and supporting such an outstanding School of Education. I am keenly aware of the meaningful and important ways SJU is impacting New York City and our region, and look forward to our continuing this outstanding work.

The School of Education is celebrating over 100 years of producing successful teachers and administrators, and has a rich history aligned with many success stories. Many of our programs are nationally recognized for their impact and cutting edge research, and are renowned for their research, theories and innovative practices that are making a difference in schools around the globe.

Hence, we have much to be proud of. But I believe the best is yet to come as we move forward with new, innovative programs and a renewed mission to reach and enrich the lives of those we serve. It is my privilege to work with such a distinguished faculty and staff who are passionate about teaching, learning, and service. In this time of new literacies, global perspectives, and increased expectations for high-quality teacher instruction, the faculty and staff at SJU will continue to work together as a high achieving, dynamic and collaborative faculty to promote best practice in research and instruction.

In the SOE, we are passionate about our mission of reaching out to NYC, our region, and the world, and to improve the lives of those we touch.  Thus, SJU is an ideal choice for any student wanting to share in the spirit and work of service – the cornerstone of the SOE and St. John’s University.

I enjoy meeting and getting to know our students, partners, and alumni. Please call or stop by anytime to visit.
