Applicable Licenses and Credit Requirement Dates
The rules governing licenses issued in New York state have changed. The state is no longer on a strict two year cycle pertaining to specific licenses; instead, the renewal is now defined by the licensee's birthdate.
The basics of the rules are as follows:
Any license issued after January 1, 2007 will have an expiration date equal to the licensee's birthday, with the year depending on whether he or she was born in an even or odd year. For example, if your birthday is January 24, 1958, you will now renew your license on your birthday in even numbered years.
For anyone renewing an expired license, the original license rule will apply and the license will expire on the next birthday in the appropriate even or odd year.
For additional information or to have any questions answered, contact the New York State Insurance Department at http://www.ins.state.ny.us/.
For New York licensees: The state of New York requires 15 hours of continuing education every two years. In order to receive New York credit, participants should send their certificate of completion directly to the state at the time of license renewal.
Please note: The New York continuing education criteria limit NYCL courses to 50% of the total 15 hours required for license renewal.
For New Jersey licensees: The state of New Jersey requires 48 hours of continuing education every four years. In order to receive New Jersey credit, the Center will send proof of the student's attendance to the state and banking system.
