Graduate Assistantship and Doctoral Fellows Position Descriptions

There are two main types of academic graduate assistantships available in the University: Master’s Assistantships for Master’s students, and Doctoral Fellows for doctoral students. All of these positions require some form of teaching and/or research. In nearly all cases, students must be enrolled in a program of study affiliated with the department or program offering the assistantship. With few exceptions to be approved by the Office of the Provost, Master’s Assistants are required to teach and/or conduct research for 15-20 hours per week during the regular Fall and Spring semesters. Master’s students are not permitted to be teachers of record, although they are permitted to teach labs. Doctoral Fellows will be required to work 18-20 hours per week as teachers and/or researchers; they can, with permission and depending upon the course, be teachers of record, usually within the core. Unless teaching the maximum number of allowable labs (3) or courses (2), all academic graduate assistants must devote up to 5 hours per week on student success initiatives, which might include tutoring, mentoring, meeting with students, conducting focus groups, or other activities to be determined by their supervisor in consultation with the Office of the Provost.

In the course of their teaching assignments, Master’s Assistants and Doctoral Fellows are expected to attend any necessary orientations, assessment workshops, relevant faculty development meetings, and meet with students as necessary. For more information, students should contact program supervisors and consult the Graduate Assistant/Doctoral Fellows Manual.

Please note that the number of GAs and DFs can vary from year to year.
