Robert A. Mangione, Ed.D.,

Dr. Robert A. Mangione, Provost, Office of the
Provost and Professor of Pharmacy, joined the St. John's University
faculty in 1979. During his tenure at St. John's University,
Dr. Mangione served as a clinical faculty member at Nassau County
Medical Center from 1979 to 1981 and at Long Island Jewish Medical
Center and the Schneider Children's Hospital from 1981 to
1990. While at the Children's Hospital, Dr. Mangione also
served as the institution's Pediatric Clinical Pharmacy
Coordinator. He was appointed Assistant Dean for Pharmacy
Student Affairs in 1990, Associate Dean in 1996 and Dean of the
College in 1999. Prior to joining the faculty of the College
of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Dr. Mangione served as a Pharmacy
Intern at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and a Pharmacy Resident
at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, Long Island. He was
appointed as Interim Provost in August of 2012 and became Provost
in December of 2012.
Dr. Mangione earned his B.S. in Pharmacy from
St. John's University. He also holds an M.S. in Pharmaceutical
Sciences (Clinical Pharmacy) from St. John's University College of
Pharmacy and Health Sciences as well as a P.D. and an Ed.D. in
Educational Administration and Supervision from St. John's
University, School of Education. He has authored or
co-authored over 100 publications in the professional literature
area. His research interests include Pharmaceutical Care for
Patients with Celiac Disease, Pediatric Pharmacotherapy, and
Poverty Issues in Healthcare and Education. He maintains
professional pharmacy licensure in New York State and is an active
member of the Scientific/Medical Advisory Board of the National
Foundation for Celiac Awareness. He previously served as the
President of the Long Island Society of Hospital Pharmacists,
editor of the New York State Journal of Pharmacy, and as a
contributing editor to the Children's Hospital Quarterly and to
U.S. Pharmacist. In addition, Dr. Mangione served for 10 years
as a professional member of the New York State Board of Pharmacy
and is currently an extended member of the Board. Dr.
Mangione is currently collaborating with NFCA (
National Foundation for Celiac Awareness) Consultant Loretta
Jay, as a Co-Primary Investigator in a research study supported
by a grant from the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) to evaluate the risk of adverse
reactions in celiac disease patients associated with the
ingestion of gluten contained in medications. St. John’s University
faculty members Dr. Somnath Pal and Dr. S. William Zito are also
working on this study.
St. John's University has honored Dr. Mangione with the
Outstanding Faculty Achievement Award in 1989, the Vincentian
Mission Award in 1995, the Pietas Medal in 2002 and the St. Vincent
de Paul Medal in 2008. Pharmacy students voted him Teacher of the
Year in 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1996 and he was presented with a
Leader in Education Award from the St. John’s University, School of
Education in 2009. In 1997, he was named an "Outstanding Alumni"
and inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame at Christ the King High
School in Middle Village, New York. Dr. Mangione and his
family are members of St. Raymond of Penyafort R.C. Church in East
Rockaway, Long Island where he previously served as a CYO
basketball coach and is currently a lector.
