Join as members of the campus community come together to celebrate,
honor, reflect and pray for the women of our community. This year
we pay special tribute to the victims of the Triangle
Shirtwaist Factory Fire who lost their lives 100 years ago.

Women’s History Month Empower
Hour
Join fellow students for an enjoyable afternoon of activities to
“empower” each of us in mind, body and soul. The afternoon will
include meditation, educational workshops, wellness opportunities
and a self-defense class. During the educational workshop we will
discuss the women of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire and the
differences between their working experiences and our own in
today’s society.

Factory Fire Commemorative Event
Lecture, Book Signing and Candle Light
Vigil
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire was one of the most
catastrophic events in the history of New York as hundreds of
garment workers, most of them women, perished as a result of this
tragedy. Join us as we discuss the events of that day and its
aftermath. Dr. Richard Greenwald, Dean of Drew University,
Caspersen School of Graduate Studies, Director of University
Partnerships and Professor of History, will share his considerable
insights into this tragedy and sign copies of his book The
Triangle Fire, the Protocols of Peace and Industrial Democracy: In
Progressive Era New York (Labor in Crisis). Ms. Sheila
Hosni, Director, League of Women Voters of the City of New York,
will provide information on her organization’s history and their
advocacy on behalf of women today.
Following the presentation, St. John’s University students will
team up with the Tottenville High School Women’s Chorus of Staten
Island for a candlelight vigil including original music and
readings on the various lives and women who were affected by this
great tragedy. This is an event that you will not want to
miss!
