Doctoral Cohort in Literacy Honors Legacy of Triangle Shirtwaist Victims
Most of the 146 victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory were women who were locked in the factory and unable to escape. Today, at risk women of the 21st Century are "locked" in situations and unable to escape their oppressed lifestyles for a variety of reasons. Women's support groups, access to higher education and improved literacy skills can help bridge the gap between dire situations and newfound opportunities. The St. John's Doctoral Women in Literacy Cohort will share their experiences and expertise with women who are "locked" in situations and unable to free themselves and realize their dreams. We will show how we have supported one another throughout our doctoral educational journey, and how scholarship and fellowship funding has provided some members with the means to finance their doctoral studies. We will share ideas on how literacy skills may empower individuals yearning to reach academic success. Finally, we will share how the University’s Vincentian mission has inspired us as we assist at risk communities in need.
