The School of Risk
Management (SRM) of The Tobin College of
Business at St. John’s University today announced the
appointment of Albert J. Beer as the Michael J. Kevany/XL Visiting
Professor in Insurance and Actuarial Science Practice.
Mr. Beer recently retired as Executive Vice President of both
American Re-Insurance Company and the American Re Corporation (now
Munich Re America), following a 33-year career including service as
Chief Actuary for Skandia America Group and Partner with
Tillinghast, a division of Towers Perrin. He began his insurance
career as an actuarial supervisor with Insurance Services Office
(ISO) and from 1976 -1984 held the position of Associate Professor
of Actuarial Science at The College of Insurance.
Mr. Beer is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, and
has served as the Society’s President. He has also been a Director
of the Casualty Actuarial Society and The American Academy of
Actuaries, and is a member of the Board of Directors of The Insurance Information Institute,
The Actuarial
Foundation, and The School of Risk Management Board of
Overseers.
In fulfilling the requirements of the Chair, Mr. Beer will teach
graduate courses in the financial operations of insurance
companies, and undergraduate actuarial science courses. In
addition, he will work with SRM’s Executive Director, Dr. Ellen
Thrower, in building and strengthening SRM relationships and
partnerships in Bermuda. “Al brings to us a wonderful combination
of senior, executive-level business experience, combined with a
love for students and teaching,” said Dr. Thrower. “His impressive
real-world experience, technical knowledge, and superb teaching
skills will richly benefit our school and our students,” she
added.
Mr. Beer is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Manhattan College,
where he earned a B.S. in Mathematics. He received his M.S.
in Mathematics from the University of Colorado.
The School of Risk Management was founded in 1901 as the
Insurance Society of New York and over the years evolved into The
College of Insurance (TCI). In June 2001, TCI merged with St.
John’s University, becoming a school of The Tobin College of
Business. Located in New York City’s downtown financial district,
SRM awards undergraduate, M.B.A. and M.S. degrees in the insurance,
risk management and actuarial science disciplines. Through its
Center for Professional Education, SRM also provides education,
training and consulting services to industry, governments, and
regulators worldwide.
